Spaying and Neutering

Making the decision to spay and neuter a pet is one of the best decisions a pet owner can make. The reason is that there are many health benefits of these procedures, which can actually increase your pet's lifespan. Here at Simcoe Veterinary Hospital in Barrie, we recommend that all of our canine and feline patients be spayed and neutered so they can live longer, healthier lives.

We are proud to be an AAHA-accredited hospital, which means we go above and beyond to provide pets with the best possible surgical care. According to AAHA's spay and neuter guidelines, healthy pets can be spayed and neutered as young as 8 weeks of age. The exact age recommendation varies for each pet, depending on breed, so we'll be happy to discuss this with you in more detail at your next visit.

Spaying and Neutering Benefits

  • Health benefits: Having your pet spayed can eliminate the risk of mammary tumors and uterine infections. Neutering can eliminate the risk of testicular cancer and prostate disease. As a result, your pet can live a longer, healthier life.
  • Behavioral benefits: Spayed/neutered pets are less likely to roam. Plus, spaying eliminates the heat cycle and associated behaviors, while neutering can eliminate aggressive behavior, marking, “humping” and other unwanted behaviors.
  • Community benefits: A sterilized pet, of course, can't reproduce. Therefore, the fewer pets there are in the community, the more likely shelter pets are to be adopted. Spaying/neutering essentially reduces the pet overpopulation and reduces the number of unwanted pets that end up being euthanized.
